Inspiring the Next Generation: Navigating Career Opportunities in ICT at Deeper Life High School, Uyo

It is one thing to build technology; it is another thing entirely to stand before a room full of energetic, ambitious young minds who are standing on the precipice of their futures. On Tuesday, 16th June 2026, I had the absolute privilege of visiting Deeper Life High School (DLHS), Uyo Campus, as a guest speaker for their career seminar.
The school management took an incredible, intentional step: as these Basic 9 students prepare to choose their senior secondary career paths, the school brought in professionals from various fields—including medicine, law, and civil engineering—to guide them. I was honored to handle the domain closest to my heart: Careers in ICT.
DLHS is arguably one of the best secondary schools in Nigeria, and their consistently outstanding performance in external exams like JAMB speaks for itself. When I arrived on campus, I quickly realized that their stellar reputation is no accident—there is real, high-quality education happening within those walls.
A Generation of Digital Natives
Right from the moment I arrived, I was deeply impressed. The entire livestream for the event was being handled completely by the students.
Wanting to test their familiarity with modern devices, I handed my laptop over to a young student to transfer my presentation slides. Without missing a beat, he took over the computer and set everything up like a total tech guru.
When it was time to present, I opened my first slide with a phrase every coder knows by heart: "HELLO WORLD". It was my way of testing the room. To my amazement, 100% of the students were already familiar with the phrase and different programming languages. Right then, I knew I was in the right place.
Mapping the End-to-End Software Blueprint
Instead of just talking about abstract tech concepts, I walked the students through what it actually takes to transform a raw idea into a working software solution—whether it's a mobile app, a web platform, AI, or Web3 technologies. Using a fintech mobile app (Pharste) as a real-world case study, we deconstructed the product development lifecycle from validation to launch.
From there, we broke down the 7 Core ICT Career Pathways, matching each domain with its specific senior secondary school subject requirements, necessary skill sets, job market readiness, and a strategic 10-year industry projection:
Software Engineering: The backbone of modern tech, requiring strong analytical grounding in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Studies.
AI & Machine Learning: A hyper-growth sector heavily reliant on advanced statistics and data systems.
Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics: The tactical defense matrix protecting global infrastructure.
UI/UX & Digital Design: The bridge between human psychology and software geometry.
Networks, Cloud & Hardware: The literal pipelines and virtual servers keeping the world connected.
Tech Leadership & Strategy: Roles like Product and Project Management that orchestrate talent and commercial vision.
Among other roles
Discovering Passion and the Power of Flexibility
A major focus of my presentation was helping students identify their true calling, drawing powerful insights from T.D. Jakes’ book, Destiny. I emphasized that while choosing a path today is important, they must remain flexible. The reality of the future may require them to pivot, and they should never feel entirely trapped by a single childhood decision.
To drive this home, I shared the story of my close friend and big brother, David Antia. I met David during my undergraduate days in the Physics Department at the University of Uyo. David naturally possessed every trait of a brilliant lawyer or philosopher, but because he had chosen the Science track in secondary school, he found himself studying Physics.
However, David had the extraordinary boldness and courage to redefine his path. After earning his first degree in Physics, he pivoted to his true calling. Today, he is thriving beautifully as a Law student at Topfaith University, maintaining a pristine First Class, and rising to become the President of the University's Student Representative Council (SRC).
The Lesson: While it is a massive privilege to get your career choice right the first time—much like I did by aligning my work with my personal calling—you are never stuck. Your capacity to learn and pivot is your greatest superpower.
A Quiet Reflection on Equal Opportunity
As the seminar concluded and I listened to the other professionals speak, my thoughts suddenly drifted back to my own childhood. As a proud product of the public school system, I remembered what it was like growing up without a functional library, let alone a computer lab or a high-level career day. In fact, there were several cutting-edge career paths I didn't even know existed until I got into the university!
While I am incredibly proud of the world-class environment Deeper Life High School provides for its students, the experience left me with a deep sense of responsibility. I left the campus wishing and hoping to create this exact same awareness, mentorship, and tech exposure within our public schools, ensuring that every Nigerian child—regardless of background—gets a fair shot at building the future.
Gratitude
A heartfelt thank you to the principal, Mrs. U. R. Udoaka, the management, and the exceptional staff of Deeper Life High School, Uyo Campus, for the warm reception and the invitation to inspire these brilliant minds. The future of tech is bright, and a big piece of it is growing right here in Uyo!
